If you drive a commercial vehicle, passing your DOT physical exam is a key step to staying legally certified. This guide walks you through exactly what your exam day looks like at South OC DOT Physicals, led by Dr. Takagi D.C., an FMCSA-Certified Medical Examiner.

Your Exam Day, Step by Step

  1. Check-in — Bring your license and any documents below. No paperwork to print in advance — all forms are provided on-site.

  2. Medical History Review — The examiner asks about past illnesses, surgeries, medications, and current health conditions.

  3. Physical Exam & Urinalysis — A quick check of vision, hearing, blood pressure, and a urine sample (checked for diabetes, kidney issues, and similar conditions — this is separate from DOT drug testing, which we also offer).

  4. Certification — If you pass, you'll receive a medical certificate valid for up to 2 years.

The full visit typically takes 20-30 minutes.

What to Bring

  • Valid driver's license

  • Glasses or contacts, if you need them for driving

  • A list of current medications

  • A doctor's note, if you're taking medication or managing a medical condition

How to Prepare

  • Get a good night's sleep before your appointment

  • Avoid caffeine and tobacco for a few hours beforehand

  • Eat a light meal — don't arrive hungry or overly full

  • Wear comfortable clothing for easy examination access

If You Don't Pass

A failed result isn't the end of the road. Common reasons include high blood pressure, vision or hearing issues, or uncontrolled diabetes. In many cases, you can address the issue and return for re-evaluation, sometimes with a temporary medical certificate in the meantime.
